Should We Blame Millennials for Recruiting Woes...or Our Leadership?

December 13, 2017

As reported in the Dallas Morning News and on Officer.com, Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall told City Council members "Millennials have proved to be an particularly tough sell because they 'want all days off and to be the chief in six months.' The title on the story at Officer.com is Dallas Police Chief Blames Millennials for Recruiting Woes, so I have to ask: Is that an accurate depiction of the problem?

I don't think so. As mentioned in our White Paper Navigating the Changing Seascape of Maritime Public Safety, the changing workforce represents the primary challenge for law enforcement leaders all across the country, and especially in conservation law enforcement. Millennials are the largest segment of the personnel pool, yet we still use antiquated methods designed 20 years ago (and delivered by baby-boomers) to attract, train and employ this new, advanced and technology savvy population. If we don't change how we recruit them, prepare them, and nurture them, the divide will continue... and deepen.
